Family Therapy with a Couple Threatening Divorce
Park Tai-Young

Moon Jung-Hwa
Abstract
Miles and Huberman¡¯s matrix and network analysis were used to explore the elements of marital conflict, the factors influencing it, and the therapeutic methods effective for resolving it. Counseling talk and memos were analyzed for six months of family, marital, and individual therapy with a husband, wife, and son. Elements of the marital conflict included relationship disengagement, frequent fighting, communication cutoff, a dysfunctional sexual relationship, and tension stemming from a threatened divorce. The factors influencing the conflict included the husband¡¯s unresolved emotion with his family of origin and the couple¡¯s unsuccessful solution attempts. The therapist, assuming a mediator¡¯s role and taking a client-centered approach, intervened by reframing, by strengthening family members¡¯ insight and therapeutic coalitions, and by exploring successful experiences and possibilities for change. As a result of these interventions, the marital conflict was alleviated, as were the son¡¯s behavioral problems, and there was a change in individual and family relationships.
